BFS, or Bait Finesse Style, is something I am completely new to! I have been using traditional casting & spinning gear for years but I kept hearing more and more about BFS recently so I had to give it a shot. Fortunately, after putting a post out on social media, I heard from a couple of YOU! Micah sold me this Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG / Shimano Sensilite combo. Mark sold me a Fishband GH100. Both of these setups are going to be EXCELLENT! I want to eventually get a 5 - 6' Ultralight Casting Rod for the Fishband. I will likely get it on Aliexpress at some point. Stay tuned for that. Clearly, based on the multiple big bass I caught in this video, you can see that I am going to like BFS very much! Honestly, I am super stoked about the fact that I am actually an ambidextrous angler and was able to switch effectively to a LH reel. Stay tuned for more Bait Finesse Style in the future! The Bait Finesse System has been around for a few years, giving anglers a means to throw ultralight lures and other tackle on specialized bait casting equipment. However, it has been implemented very little for crappie fishing. Sure, anglers have caught crappie on bait finesse systems, but they have not been used much for crappie fishing mostly because the options out there were a little too beefy for bass fishing or a little too wispy for trout fishing. FISHING GEAR USED - • ROD - Jenko Double Down Bait Finesse System Rod: 🤍 • REEL - Shimano SLX BFS Reel: 🤍 • LINE - Power-Pro Braided Line, 8-pound: 🤍 • PLASTIC - Jenko Big T Tickle Fry, color - Smokeshow: 🤍 Thankfully companies like Jenko Fishing are making rods specifically tuned for crappie fishing, especially casting to crappie with LiveScope. I was fortunate to spend time with the Jenko designers and anglers and got to test out the BFS rods before their public release last week at ICAST. I spent time casting jigs on the prototypes up at the shop as well as fishing with them on the water with Tony Sheppard. They gave me a rod to go experiment a few weeks ago, so I figured I’d document my initial experiences since this will be new for a lot of crappie anglers. I spent some time chasing crappie with it and getting an understanding of what its advantages and disadvantages are. I was pleasantly surprised that BFS offers more advantages than disadvantages. In fact, it impressed me so much that I will likely make the switch to bait casting BFS gear for much of my crappie fishing now. From line management to casting distance, the Jenko Double Down rod was impressive with jigs as light as 1/32 ounce, and it’s rated to throw a 1/80-ounce jig. BFS reels incorporate shallower designs with completely different gearing. So you can’t just put your regular bait caster on this rod and go crappie fishing. It won’t be a great experience. There is plenty of control in the wind and the braking allows for pitching micro jigs with minimal adjustments to the braking system. The drag got a real workout with these big bluegill. The drag peeled out smooth and started without any stuttering. The clicking drag sound is helpful to know how much line the fish takes out. The only real downside is that the spool is set pretty deep in the frame of the reel. This makes it difficult to access the spool when setting the hook or...backlashing. Comparing the 2023 Conquest BFS to the 2017 version, almost every aspect I would consider an upgrade. The gears being Micro Module aluminum can arguably be a downgrade but, I feel these gears will keep their smoothness for a long time compared to older Shimano aluminum Micro Module gears. I will be comparing the Conquest BFS to many other BFS reels such as the Daiwa Gekkabijin AIR TW, Silver Creek AIR TW and Curado BFS. The taper/power really stands out to me for catching beefy panfish and medium sized bass. I will need to catch a few bigger bass to really test the upper end of the rod. I have caught a walleye and a few decent pike with the rod but, they were in open water. Sensitivity is very good for a $200. Detecting bites was very easy, even on slack line. The power is a great balance to get a good hookset and be able to cushion the fight. In this video "BFS Academy Fishing Line Guide: How to Choose Line to Use for BFS Fishing", Hobie-Wan Kenobi talks about each line type and how they can be used in BFS fishing. Digitaka Discount Code: 9J7 🤍 People often talk about reels and rods when it comes to fishing tackle. What about fishing line? It literally connects you to the fish and is a bigger factor than most people think. The properties of different types of fishing line "change" the attributes of the fishing rod more noticeably than with heavier powered bass rods. Fishing line type plays a huge role in hookup/landing percentages, hooksets and power. Below are the three main types and some quick pros/cons: (Nylon) Monofilament: Is the most widely available line and is known for its stretch, easy handling and low cost. Mono can help you land more fish due to its stretch cushioning the head shakes of a fish. The fish can also get more of the lure in its mouth, resulting in less short strikes. Mono floats so, you can use that to your advantage too. Fluorocarbon: A favorite among enthusiast anglers due to its sensitivity, abrasion resistance and being almost invisible in the water. Fluorocarbon is stiffer than mono and requires more attention than mono or braid. Once you learn to use it, there is no better line for using finesse jigs for panfish or bass. (PE) Braid: Easiest to handle and lasts a lifetime when used with a leader. Braid has almost no stretch and is SUPER sensitive on tight line. While it is supple and easy to handle, those same qualities make braided line far less sensitive when the line is slack. Braid can "add" power to a setup with it's lack of stretch. Because of this, braid is not recommended for moving lures such as crankbaits unless your rod has a soft enough action to compensate for the lack of stretch.
