Gentle, soft transitions alternate with sharp, clean edges – creating a design that appears to have been shaped by the wind. The ID.4 is an SUV in a completely new form. Powerful front end. The flat front end symbolises the vehicle’s robustness and strength. The air enters through a wide inlet in its lower zone, eliminating the need for the radiator grille. Large headlights give the electric SUV a friendly but focused expression. These consist almost completely of LEDs, even as standard. Each exterior mirror integrates a small projection light, which directs the typical ID light honeycomb onto the ground when the door is open, thereby conveniently lighting the surroundings for entry and exit. Modern lighting technology. The ID.4 design package includes the IQ.LIGHT with LED matrix headlights. Its light modules are made up of 18 individual LEDs each, eleven of which can be individually switched off and dimmed. Supported by an additional spotlight, they emit intelligently controlled continuous main beam illumination. They always light up the road as brightly as possible without dazzling other road users. The A-pillar starts a long way forwards, while a strong, wave-like shoulder line brings momentum into the vehicle body. The low, dynamic roof arch makes the vehicle appear long and stretched, running into the flat pillars. Sophisticated aeroacoustics with specially shaped details, as well as the elaborate insulation measures in the body, reduce the airborne and structure-borne noise of the drive, chassis and tyres. As a result, the E-SUV achieves an almost silent unleashing of its power in the interior. Low drag coefficient of 0.28. Decisive for the low drag coefficient is the flowing basic shape of the body with its greenhouse, which is strongly drawn in towards the rear. Multiple elements come into play to separate the flow at the rear: the large roof spoiler, the three-dimensional shape of the tail light clusters, and the diffuser that finishes the almost flat underbody at the rear. The flush, electrically unlocked door handles are also designed to optimise air flow for minimum drag losses; the same goes for the wheel rims with their flat design. Tailored to its passengers. The architecture of Volkswagen’s modular electric drive (MEB) platform arranges the spatial relationships for people and technology in a way that has never been seen before. The overhangs of the ID.4 are short, and at 4,584 millimetres long, the compact E-SUV has a wheelbase of 2,771 millimetres. This benefits the spacious interior, which has as much available space as a conventional SUV of the next-larger class. The high-voltage battery lies as a flat block underneath the passenger compartment, while the electric drive motor, power and control electronics for the electric drive and gearbox are located on the rear axle to save space. The short vehicle front end accommodates the radiator and large components of the air conditioning system. The luggage compartment volume is 543 litres, a figure that increases to 1,575 litres after folding down the backrests (loaded to roof height). The roof railings are fitted as standard, and the permitted roof load is 75 kilograms. Air and light. The calm interior design emphasises the light and airy feeling of space. The dash panel appears to float as it is not connected to the centre console. Its front section drops down towards the interior in steps, while painted decorative trim separates the top and bottom halves. The Plus design package adds a tilting panoramic sunroof that stretches across almost the entire surface of the roof. An electric blind prevents the interior from heating up on sunny days. In this video I show you the exterior, interior, menus, a 0 to 100 kph launch and some fun hidden features of the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 GTX! Please SUBSCRIBE & enable all notifications 🔔 if you like my POV drives, thanks! 🙏 👉 🤍 👈 For now, the GTX is the most powerful version of the ID4, with 2 electric motors and 299 horsepower for the 4 wheels. And something that struck me immediately when I went to pick up this car is how big it actually is, it's a real SUV size car, comparable to a VW Tiguan. EXTERIOR - The color of our car is a fairly neutral "Scale Silver Metallic" with a contrasting black roof. At the front we find a long LED line across the entire width, which connects the brilliant light blocks with their LED DRL’s. The front end has a very clean and futuristic look to it with no large openings or grilles. On the side, we see the nicely integrated and illuminated door handles and the huge 21-inch rims. Only by a label in front of the front door, you know it's a GTX. At the back then, we find LED blocks with several illuminating little light panels that remind me very much of the blocks from the previous BMW M4 CS. Again, these 2 light blocks are connected by a narrow LED line across the full width. And we also get to see a nice start-up animation of the taillights when we open the car. INTERIOR - Inside it feels very spacious, we no longer have a transmission tunnel taking up space and in the rear, the floor is nicely flat. Between the front seats we have this convenient free standing center console with smartphone tray for wireless charging and wireless CarPlay. The spacious feeling is further enhanced by the impressive glass roof, which runs practically over the entire length and width - in one piece! In the center, we find a gigantic touchscreen where you can dig deep into all kinds of menus and settings. Very occasionally there is a delay after a swipe input, but eventually the command is always executed. A lot of the interfaces look familiar if you have driven other recent Volkswagens, like for example the color settings. The same goes for the drive modes, only here you can find an extra mode 'Traction' which permanently activates the front motor, so that you have a real 4WD system at your disposal in circumstances with less grip. A little thing that I hadn’t seen before is the customisable home button. You can choose for the VW logo, but also for just about any flag in the world, because this car will be sold globally, nice! In front of us we notice that there is almost no dashboard left, a very basic display behind the steering wheel, that's all. But this is compensated by the interactive LED line against the windshield and the HUD with Augmented Reality directions projected onto the road. As a result, the cockpit interface no longer ends at the dashboard, but is stretched out in depth, as it were, even outward. First element is the little screen on your steering wheel, behind that the LED strip that gives you direction. Then outside, right in front of you, there’s your driving data in the HUD and behind that even, projected far down the road, the augmented reality elements. It works really well together and I am a big fan, this just smells like the future! DRIVING - The GTX is heavy. Just like the other ID4s. But it is a lot faster to the 100 km/h. It needs just 6.2 seconds, where the Pro Performance version needs 8.5 seconds. So quite a big difference. It is still no rocket, but it is just a lot more lively to drive, the throttle response is more direct, it can handle bad roads or sand and gravel, and the GTX has a higher top speed, 180 km/h instead of 160 km/h. It shares its 77 kWh battery with the ID4 Pro and 1st edition, and the GTX can travel 480 km on it, according to WLTP standards. #VWID.4 #ID.4 #CoupleCarReview This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD electric SUV.VW says, the ID.4 is a car for “the millions, not the millionaires. With a competitive price point for an EV under $45,000 CAD/$40,000 USD, this is one to consider especially with EV rebates in both Canada and the US. The ID.4 RWD has a single rear mounted electric motor with 201 horsepower and the dual motor AWD model has 302 horsepower. RWD gets 400 km/260 miles of EV range and AWD 386 km/249 miles of EV range. This EV comes with standard RWD. This EV has a 82-kWh lithium-ion battery that has a maximum charging rate of 11 kW AC or 125 kW with a DC charger. On the road, you can charge 5% to 80% in an estimated 38 minutes. That means a 10-minute charge can add almost 100km of range on a DC fast-charger. While at home, it can take as little as 7.5 hours to reach full charge on a level 2 charger. All ID.4 models come with 3 years of unlimited charging sessions at any Electrify Canada DC fast charging stations. There are loads of standard features in this electric vehicle including, a 10” touchscreen, a 5.3” digital gauge display, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, cloth or leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, a leather wrapped heated steering wheel, LED headlights and LED taillights, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert plus 19” wheels. The ID.4 AWD can tow 2700 pounds and Volkswagen offers a warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km/50,000 miles. In the US, Volkswagen offers 2 years of free scheduled maintenance or 20,000 miles. The 2021-2022 Volkswagen ID 4 received the maximum rating of 5 stars at the Euro NCAP crash test. Compared to the smaller ID.3, the ID.4 hold more appeal for family buyers wanting more space, and potential owners will be reassured with high marks in child occupant protection, as well as for the protection of vulnerable road users and for safety assistance. VW also fit Local Hazard Warning as standard equipment on the ID.4. TEST RESULTS The passenger compartment of the ID.4 remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings showed good protection or adequate for all critical body regions of the driver and passenger. VW showed that good protection would be provided also to the knees and femurs of occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. Analysis of the deformable barrier used in the frontal offset test revealed a small area of high deformation. However, the deceleration profile of the trolley on which the barrier was mounted showed that the ID.4 would not be an aggressive crash opponent. In both the side barrier and side pole tests, the car provided good protection to all critical body regions and scored maximum points. Occupant excursion in a far-side impact was rated as weak. The ID.4 has, as standard, a centre-mounted airbag which protects the driver and front passenger from hard mutual contact in the event of a side crash. Euro NCAP's test showed that the airbag offers good protection for the heads of the front occupants. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric analysis of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection. In both the frontal offset test and the side barrier test, the ID.4 provided good protection to all critical body areas of both the 6 year and 10 year dummy, and scored maximum points in this part of the assessment. The front passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be fitted in that seating position. Clear information is provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag and the system was rewarded. All of the child restraint types for which the ID.4 is designed could be properly fitted and accommodated in the car. The protection provided to the head of a struck pedestrian was good or adequate over most of the bonnet surface, with some poor results recorded only on the stiff windscreen pillars. The bumper provided good protection to pedestrians' legs at all test locations. Protection of the pelvis was good or adequate at all points tested by Euro NCAP. The autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system of the ID.4 can detect pedestrians and cyclists. In tests of its response to such vulnerable road users, the system performed adequately, avoiding or mitigating collision in most test scenarios. The ID.4 cannot detect pedestrians to the rear of the car and AEB-reverse tests were not performed. The ID.4 has a speed assistance system as standard. This uses a camera and digital mapping to determine the local speed limit and the driver can choose to allow the system to adjust the speed automatically. A seatbelt reminder is standard for all seating positions. A fatigue-detection system monitors driver alertness and issues a warning if impaired driving is detected. Lane assistance warns the driver if the car is drifting out of lane and gently corrects the vehicle path. The system also intervenes more aggressively in some more critical situations. The AEB system performed well in tests of its response to other vehicles, with collisions avoided or mitigated in almost all scenarios. Lows Infotainment system isn't as intuitive as we'd like, unexciting driving dynamics, base model doesn't offer as much range as more expensive trims. Verdict The ID.4 is an electric car for the people, but it provides drivers little to get enthused about. Overview Volkswagen's electric car for the masses is the 2023 ID.4 SUV, and it nicely pairs practicality with comfort and adequate driving range to allow drivers to make the switch from internal combustion. We just wish its driving demeanor was more playful. Rear-wheel drive models come with one motor and 201 horsepower; opting for all-wheel drive adds a second motor and ups power output to 295. The maximum range is about 275 miles per charge, but the base Standard trim, while cheaper, pairs its more attractive price tag with a smaller battery and only around 208 miles of range. Luckily, the ID.4 comes standard with DC fast-charging capability, which makes juicing up at public charging stations relatively quick and easy. What's New for 2023? Volkswagen has moved production of the U.S.-spec ID.4 to its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee for the 2023 model year. The entry-level Standard model joins the lineup this year with an attractive base price, but it uses a smaller 58-kWh battery pack and comes with an estimated 208-mile driving range. Also new to the ID.4 family is the fanciest Pro S Plus trim, which adds luxury features such as heated rear seats, a three-zone automatic climate control system, unique 20-inch wheels, and a premium stereo system. All models now come standard with the larger 12.0-inch infotainment display that was optional last year and VW has peppered in several minor design enhancements such as gloss black exterior trim, updated wheel designs, and changes to the available paint colors. The center console has been slightly redesigned, interior upholstery options have been refreshed, and Pro S models receive illuminated Volkswagen logos on the front and back. Pricing and Which One to Buy Standard: $40,290 Pro: $45,290 Standard S: $45,290 Pro S: $50,290 Pro S Plus: $52,740 Although the new Standard model carries the most budget-friendly price tag, we'd opt for the mid-range Pro to help maximize the ID.4's range and unlock the ability to DC fast charge at public charging terminals. The optional dual-motor, the all-wheel-drive powertrain is worth the upgrade, too, as it boosts horsepower and improves performance. EV Motor, Power, and Performance With the single rear-mounted motor, the ID.4 makes 201 horsepower, but the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model pumps out 295. Maximum towing capacity is a stout 2700 pounds. Regenerative braking helps recapture energy when slowing the vehicle, but the familiar one-pedal driving that EV drivers have come to appreciate is largely missing here, even in the ID.4's most aggressive regenerative mode. Also lacking is the traditional gut-punch acceleration that electric vehicles often provide. The rear-wheel-drive ID.4 isn't slow by traditional compact-crossover standards, but its 7.6-second run to 60 mph in our testing demonstrates that it's far more laid back than quicker EV competitors. Going for the more powerful all-wheel-drive model sharpens the ID.4's accelerative performance, as evidenced by its 5.4-second jump to 60 mph at our test track. The ID.4 handles less sharply than some other EVs, but we appreciate its smooth and refined ride quality and quiet cabin. Range, Charging, and Battery Life The EPA estimates that the ID.4's optional 77.0-kWh battery pack is capable of holding enough juice to power the SUV up to 275 miles between charges, which puts it in the mix with other electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Kia Niro EV. Unfortunately for VW, that's less than the 330 miles of EPA estimated range for the Tesla Model Y. The battery can be charged at home on 110- or 240-volt connections, of course, and it's also capable of DC fast-charging.
